DIY of the week!

When we bought our house our kitchen was neon yellow with an apple border...I wish I was kidding. I put that on the very top of our to do list. We spent many nights standing on chairs scraping the wall paper border off, my arms turned to jelly by the time we finished. It gave me an intense hate for it! We decided to paint our kitchen gray with accents of turquoise. Once our kitchen was painted it was time to start finding turquoise accents for the walls and what not. First thing I wanted was a chalkboard, I started looking to buy one and they were almost 60.00 dollars, hmm not happening. So I started googling it--went to my closest Re-Store (which is awesome by the way!) I bought a couple of old cabinets and decided i'd just make my own. I bought some chalkboard paint, cabinet pull, turquoise paint, chalk, wire and spent the afternoon making it. It turned out awesome! I love it, I love being able to leave my husband messages on it when we dont see eachother all day or put what is for supper on there, reminders--anything and everything. The best part of it was how cheap I got it! I think the chalkboard paint was about 10 dollars, the turquoise paint was 1.00, the cabinet was also 1.00 dollar--can't really beat that. Great to make as a gift too! If you want to give it a whirl here's how I did it
Things you need
Cabinet door
chalkboard paint
painters tape
chalk
any color of paint--i got mine at hobby lobby
wire (to hang it)
cabinet pull( chalk holder)
Hook

What I did:
Removed any hardware and sanded lightly
I taped off the middle of the cabinet and put 3 coats of the chalkboard paint on it
When that was good and dry I started on the border with my paint color, I put several coats on.
I sanded the edges to make it look a little worn and vintage
Once everything is good and dry rub your chalk over your chalkboard and clean it off--this just gets it ready.
I added the cabinet pull just screw it into the board.
Then add the hook. I use mine to hold my apron. You could use it for a pot holder, towel, anything really.
I had my husband drill two holes in the top of it and I put wire thru it  like you would hang a big picture.
I also added some command strips to the back of it just for extra measure.

Excuse my apron in this one--someone is slightly ready for fall..and hobby lobby had this on sale(it has an owl on it so of course it went straight into my basket!) My mother in law told me just because I put fall stuff out does not make it fall....If it were up to me it would always be fall!!

I hope you take the time to try this project out. So quick, easy and cheap!
